Tucson is a city in and the county seat of Pima County, Arizona, United States, and is home to Arizona University. The 2010 U.S. Census placed the city at 520,116 while the projected overall Tucson City Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) for 2015 was 980,263. Because of the 2010 Census, the Tucson MSA became part of the broader Tucson-Nogales Combined Statistical Area (CSA), with a combined population of 1,010,025. Tucson is Arizona’s second most populated city behind Phoenix and both anchor the Arizona Sun Corridor. The city is 108 miles southeast of Phoenix and 60 miles north of the border between the United States and Mexico.

Tucson was established by the Spaniards as a military fort when, in 1775, Hugo O’Conor approved the building of Presidio San Agustín del Tucsón. It was transformed into Sonora’s state after Mexico achieved independence from the Spanish Empire in 1821. In 1853, the United States inherited from Mexico an area of 29,670 square miles in present-day southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico

The city’s Spanish name, Tucsón [tukanton], comes from the O’odham Cuk abroad [tukk abroad], which means “(at) the black [rock] base,” a reference to a basalt-covered rock now known as the Sentinel Hill. Tucson is also called The Old Pueblo.

Throughout the colonial era and early statehood, Tucson was the largest city by population in Arizona, until it was replaced by Phoenix by 1920. Nevertheless during the late 20th-century population growth remained high. In 2017 Tucson becomes the first American city recognized by UNESCO as a “Center of Gastronomy.”
