History
The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, was originally called the Driehaus Museum. It was founded in 1988 and opened in February 1999 under the Museum of Modern Art. The now vivid, minimalist structure was a complete restoration by Phoenix-based architect Will Bruder of a former movie theater. Scottsdale Arts, a non-profit organization, operates the museum for the city. Lydia Okumura, James Marshall, Paolo Soleri, Squidsoup, Mel Roman, and Olafur Eliasson are among the artists exhibited at SMoCA.The museum is located in the Scottsdale Arts District, including the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, Scottsdale Museum of the West, and Scottsdale Public Library.
